Powermax plasma cutter safety video

Posted on 06/18/2020 in Setup and support, Plasma cutting

This video covers the steps you should take to ensure safe operation of your plasma cutter. Always refer to your Safety and Compliance Manual if there are any safety concerns or questions when using Hypertherm plasma equipment.

Plasma cutters and plasma cutting machines are like most industrial equipment. Although it is safe, there are safety guidelines that need to be followed to minimize unsafe or dangerous situations.

  • First and foremost, never point the torch at yourself or others.
  • When using a plasma cutting system, keep the system maintained and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure a safe plasma cutting experience. Having the proper PPE is critical when it comes to safety. These items are outlined in Hypertherm’s Safety and Compliance Manual.
  • Provide a disconnect switch close to the power supply with properly sized fuses.
  • Never operate the plasma system if any of the system covers are removed.
  • Do not substitute the original torch and lead sets with non-genuine parts. These may overheat and present a safety hazard.
  • All cutting equipment must be inspected to make sure it is in safe operating condition. When equipment is found to be incapable of reliable and safe operation, it must be repaired by qualified personnel prior to its next use or otherwise withdrawn from service.
  • Always check that the work connection is good and secure. If this connection is loose, corroded, or frayed, heat can build up and melt the connection.
  • All metals release toxic fumes when cut. The fumes produced vary depending on the metal, including stainless steel, carbon steel, zinc (galvanized), copper, and others. Caution should be taken to minimize exposure to fumes produced by any industrial process.
