The most commonly used metal removal process is grinding, in which the cutting tool uses abrasive grains bonded into a wheel that rotates against the workpiece. In many cases, plasma gouging offers a faster, safer, and much more efficient alternative.

Example of Powermax gouging for metal removal:

Customer application

Remove 10 mm of titanium hard-facing for 200 pieces of drill pipe used in oil rigs to reface damaged seal area.

Existing method and challenges

A mechanical grinder which was taking 3 days just to grind down 1 pipe.

Powermax® solution

Powermax105® plasma cutting system using the 15° hand torch with max removal gouging consumables.

Powermax results

Customer was able to gouge more than 200 pieces of pipe in 4 days compared to 1 pipe in 3 days with the mechanical grinder.
