Hypertherm customer sees opportunity in helping cows

Dairy cows stand for hours a day; often on unforgiving concrete, which takes a toll on their legs. The cows are in pain. Vet bills go up and milk production goes down. This isn't just a small problem. It's a major problem for farmers because at any given time nearly a third of their herd is lame.

Now, you might be wondering why Hypertherm is writing about cows and the woes of dairy farmers. It is because we recently came across a customer who is doing something about this problem.  The customer is called Legend Rubber. It uses a 50 horsepower Hypertherm waterjet on a WardJET table to cut large slabs of rubber into smaller pieces complete with tongue and groove joints to interlock the mats.

One of the owners tells us, “In terms of the accuracy and neatness, absolutely nothing can compare to the waterjet, but now the cutting speed is twice as fast, compared to what we used to do.”

Not having to worry about the quality of its product or meeting demand allows the company to focus on the future, which in the near term includes the opening of a larger facility next spring. This is Legend Rubber’s second move since opening its doors and likely is not the last as word of the company’s products spread among farmers.
