“No layoff” guarantee
Hypertherm has a “no layoff” policy that is unique in the cyclical machine
tool industry. The company pledges that, unless the very survival of the
company is at stake, Associates whose work is satisfactory will not
be laid off from their jobs because of economic changes or other factors.
Instead, business cycles are accommodated through strategies like
overtime and outsourcing. Consequently, Hypertherm has never had
a layoff.
Positive work/life balance
Despite its growth over the past years, Hypertherm has maintained a
family atmosphere.
Families are not only permitted to work at Hypertherm, but are
encouraged to do so. Two dozen married couples are currently
employed by the company. Most social events and other Hypertherm-
sponsored activities are available to Associate spouses and, where
appropriate, to other family members.
Hypertherm also provides “lifestyle training” for third-shift Associates.
The program helps them cope with the disruptions that are inherent in
working a non-traditional schedule.
